SANTIAGO, July 17 – Powerful storm systems sweeping across central and southern Chile have left at least three people dead and forced hundreds from their homes, as authorities warn that even heavier rainfall is expected in the coming days.

The Chilean government had earlier declared a preventive emergency across multiple regions ahead of the storm’s arrival, anticipating severe impacts linked to a strong weather front associated with El Niño conditions.
Meteorologists say Chile’s geography makes it particularly vulnerable to such events, with steep terrain and river systems prone to sudden overflow during periods of concentrated rainfall.
